iPhone Devs, we are playing with the big boys now

It hit me today, as I was walking to Barns & Noble in search for some book that would help me get a grip on all this “social media marketing” buzz. I got a chill when I thought about all the big names of software companies, magazines and even websites that are flocking to the App Store to establish their presence. But then the book Hackers & Painters by Paul Graham came to mind and set my mind at ease. These companies have the funds, the developers and the marketers. So what are we going to do? We will run faster, because the next six months to a year will define the new playing ground.

The big names are starting to cripple easily into the top one hundred of every single category in the App Store. Six months from now it will not matter how many apps are in the App Store because there will be too many. What is important is to realize that it doesn’t matter. Do you think the Big Boys are worried about it? Not at all. Not just because they’ve got the money, but because they know better. They know that marketing is marketing and that the App Store is just another marketing channel. For them, getting an app launched is just another marketing campaign.

This does not mean that it is over for the individual developer. Far from it. There are still success stories out there and there will always be. What it does mean, however, is that we need to become much more than developers, and fast. Many developers are becoming great “social media marketers” and are hitting home runs. Some of us are having a harder time learning how to “communicate.” Lets face it we are introverts. So what do we do? Maybe we should ask instead, “what would an entrepreneur do?”

The answer is simple: perhaps we should hire or partner with somebody that does know how to market.
